SIR, The arrival of fibre broadband in Monmouth during the summer was greeted with considerable satisfaction and relief by many including myself. Superfast Cymru and the Welsh Assembly celebrated the roll-out of this service and pointed out how transformative it would be particularly for many small and medium size businesses, as well as bringing to those of us a range of services unsupported by the regular drop off in band width in Wyesham where .02mb is not uncommon. It was therefore with a heavy heart that I left a BT engineer having spoken to him about the roll out timetable for the Monmouth exchange. He almost choked when I surmised that Wyesham might have fibre to cabinet by the end of 2014. Whilst he had no definitive answer it seemed that the roll out to certain areas of the town would be a long time coming if at all. No one in authority will publicly commit themselves to a realistic delivery schedule; however Superfast Cymru in their latest emailed round robin claim that currently 275,000 premises in the principality can access fibre broadband. With 3.1 million inhabitants and therefore say one million premises they are going to be very busy in the next 16 months to meet their target of 95 per cent of all Welsh premises. It would perhaps be an act of courtesy and common sense for someone to give us a realistic and achievable programme for the delivery of fibre to everyone in town. It is self evidently meaningless to trumpet on a regular basis how many Welsh exchanges have been fibre enabled if there is only a limited distribution of that service once it occurs.
