Monmouthshire heritage sites are to open their doors for free later this month.

To mark the end of Open Doors 2015, the Welsh Government will offer free entry to more than 20 of its most popular historic attractions during the last weekend, the 26th and 27th of September.

Following the demand for tickets as part of last year’s event, the Welsh Government’s Historic Environment Service (Cadw) has doubled the ticket allocation, making 20,000 free tickets available to members of the public.

Chepstow Castle, Raglan Castle and Tintern Abbey are all among the sites taking part in the initiative that aims to encourage more people to explore Welsh history.

Ken Skates, Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “Open Doors is the largest volunteer event in the heritage sector in Wales and throughout September we have seen hundreds of iconic venues across Wales offer free entry to thousands of visitors.

“We are committed to making heritage more accessible and we wanted to mark the end of this year’s successful Open Doors celebration by releasing 20,000 free tickets.

“We had such a fantastic response to our free weekend last year that we wanted to provide the opportunity for even more people to discover the dramatic stories at heritage sites across Wales for free. I hope it sparks a continued interest in exploring our fascinating heritage that helps create Wales’s unique sense of place.
