SIR,

Thank goodness the Chamber of Trade are taking active steps towards fighting the threat of closure of the Tourist Information Centre here in Monmouth.

Of course, the traders of the town will suffer the brunt of problems arising from this, but in the end that means the rest of us too.

Thank goodness, too, that the strength of the outcry is emphasised by our town council opinion and our local press. However, none of us should feel that we can sit back and relax.

What on earth do our county council think they are proposing? The idea of not encouraging visitors to Monmouthshire is suicidal.

Why are our elected representatives so out of touch with reality, and so out of touch with the opinions of their electorate?

Visitors are our lifeblood. A welcoming, thriving environment is such an important factor in the decision-making process when businesses are making up their minds where to lay foundations.

I'd bet that some businesses already here are looking at this closure proposal and thinking it is about time to get out.

We all need to keep a very close watch on this one. It is certainly a wake up call.
