A Monmouth firm continues to strengthen its commitment to the local community by working closely with Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) through its STEM programme, a key component of the council’s Economic Development Plan.
As a major employer in Monmouthshire and South Wales, Siltbuster, who provide water and wastewater solutions through pumping, treatment and storage assets, is passionate about engaging with the local community and inspiring the next generation.
Over the past 12 months, representatives from Siltbuster have visited a number of local primary schools, delivering interactive STEM activities and environmental education.
Working with pupils at Raglan Primary School, Ysgol Gymraeg Y Ffin and Osbaston C of E Primary School, the Siltbuster team delivered a range of engaging sessions linked to curriculum themes including The Wonder of Water, environmental studies and Careers Week activities focused on STEM industries.
The visits have given pupils an insight into the role that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths play in protecting our environment, while showing how the subjects they learn in the classroom can be applied in the real world.
During the sessions, pupils were introduced to Siltbuster’s work in water treatment and environmental protection, learning how the company develops solutions that help clean and protect water resources. Team members explained how science and engineering are used every day within the business and highlighted the positive impact these technologies can have on the environment.
One of the most popular activities involved practical demonstrations using flocculants and coagulants, allowing pupils to see first-hand how contaminated water can be treated.
At Raglan Primary School, Year 4 pupils also explored coding and automation using a LEGO Prime kit, which imitates a key component used within Siltbuster’s equipment.
Meanwhile, at Osbaston C of E Primary School, Year 5 pupils took part in a Careers Week session highlighting opportunities within STEM industries.
The session introduced pupils to careers in engineering, environmental science and technology, helping them understand how the subjects they study today could open the door to a wide range of exciting future opportunities inspiring the next generation.
Across all three schools, pupils showed great enthusiasm and curiosity, asking thoughtful questions and embracing the opportunity to take part in practical activities and demonstrations.
By combining presentations, experiments and hands-on learning, the sessions helped demonstrate the relevance of STEM skills while encouraging greater awareness of water, the environment and sustainability.
The visits were delivered by members of the Siltbuster team, including Adrian Martin, Jack Davies and Ffion Talbot, who were delighted to share their knowledge and experiences with pupils.
Through initiatives such as these, Siltbuster remains committed to supporting the local community, encouraging an interest in STEM subjects and inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and environmental professionals.
Ffion Talbot, Technical Sales Engineer. added: “It’s fantastic to be able to work with local schools and give pupils an insight into the science and engineering behind what we do. By making STEM subjects practical and engaging, we hope to show young people just how many exciting opportunities are available to them in the future.”
