FIRE crews battled a blaze at Govilon Boat Club on Monday morning, with eyewitnesses describing flames as high as 15 feet taking hold.

One resident said smoke could be seen 20-30 feet above the scene of the fire, while the flames themselves were 10-15 feet high.

Witnesses said three or four boats moored in the wharf were well alight, with photographs depicting the extent of the damage.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 1.16am to the incident in Govilon, with three canal boats reported on fire.

A spokesperson said: “Crews from Brynmawr and Abergavenny attended, alongside crews from Mid and West Wales FRS.

“The fire was extinguished using two hose reel jets, two light portable pumps, respirators, and a thermal imaging camera.”

“STOP message was received at 12.37pm. The incident has now been handed over to the Canal River Trust.”
