PRIMARY schools Redbrook and St Briavels have appointed Ian Barkley as their new executive head master following the retirement of headmistress Mandy Lloyd.

Mr Barkley started his head teaching career in 1998 at an Essex school before he moved to the Forest of Dean and was appointed head teacher at Forest View School in Cinderford for a further eleven years. He was also Executive Headmaster of two schools near Wooton-Under-Edge.

Mr Barkley was appointed the role after a "gruelling" interview process,

"It was a two day interview, during which I was required to take an assembly for the children, I was interviewed by the school council and had interviews with regards to church education.

"Although the interview process was challenging, it's a positive thing that the school community had the opportunity to ask the questions they really wanted to ask.

"In terms of changes to the schools, I have to say that both schools are successful and have an excellent parental support base. Mandy has done a fantastic job of running the schools, the staff are buzzing and enthusiastic and I'd like to maintain that same passion throughout my time at the schools.

"As executive head master, I want parents and staff actively involved within the school. I'd like to have regular conversations with parents about improving the school, allowing them to voice any queries or opinions they may have.

"At St Briavels and Redbrook we stand for good behaviour, high standards and respect. As executive head master I'd like to make sure this message is emphasised in the community."

Mr Barkley, who will be splitting evenly his time at each school, is very much looking forward to starting in September, "Mostly I'm looking forward to meeting the children and understanding their humour. I'd like to get to know all my colleagues as individuals so I can get the best out of everyone.

"I'm also looking forward to getting to know the families of the children. I'm not going to be the kind of head teacher who cares for the children only when they're in the school grounds. I'd like to learn about the families and build that vital relationship with them. That's what it's all about."

The new school term at St Briavels school in Lydney and Redbrook school in Monmouth, starts Wednesday 4th September.
