A vet and six nurses are planning to do a charity skydive in Cirencester this Saturday (25th February) to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis.

Amanda Kitching, a vet who locums for Elms Vets in Monmouth, will be joined by another nurse from the practice, as they accopany five other vetinary nurses from Brookfield Vets in Hereford.

Amanda was diagnosd with MS in 2010 and her friends at the two veterinary practices decided to help her raise money for the MS society.

"The charity have been really helpful and supportive to me, my husband and my work colleagues," said Amanda, "I wanted to use our fundraising efforts to not only raise money for the MS Society but to also raise awareness about MS."

"The reaction I have from many clients is surprise that I have the condition. It has shown me that people think that MS sufferers are confined to a wheelchair or need help walking. Prior to my own clinical signs and MS-related problems, my understanding about it was also limited."

MS is a condition where sufferers experience a range of symptoms, most commonly problems in vision, balance and experience waves of dizziness.

This is caused by nerve fibres in the central nervous system, called mylein, being damaged by the body's immune system.

Around 100,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with MS, mostly in people between the ages of 20 and 40. It is more common in women than it is men, almost twice as many women are affected by the condition.

As well as the skydive, the team are also holding a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses, including spa days at Holmer Park and Wye Leisure, rounds of golf at Brampton Golf Court, dinner for two at the Moon Inn in Mordiford, a brewery tour and tasting session at the Spinning Dog Brewery, and more.
