What is believed to be the country's only official memorial celebrating the Diamond Jubilee has been unveiled in Usk.

The Jubilee Arch, opposite the Sessions House in Usk commemorates the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II and was unveiled by the Mayor of Usk, Councillor Christine Wilkinson last week.

She welcomed everyone there and said that it was a real thrill to unveil the arch after months and months of planning. "We believe we are the only town in Wales to put a permanent reminder of the Queens Jubilee."

Cllr Wilkinson thanked Cllr Jill Jeramiah for coming up with the idea and Cathy Davies and Patrick Morgan for putting those ideas into a design.

She also thanked David Morgan for donating the steel to make the arch which meant they did not have to raise as much as they originally thought.

She mentioned Tony and Mark who built the wall and did "a wonderful job".

"A big thank you to Ray Hughes of Cwmbran who brought his expertise to the project and became our unofficial site manager, sourcing the bricks and coming down sometimes on a daily basis."

She ended by thanking everybody else, including the businesses and individuals who donated money to this project: "You have repeated history as the town raised money for the clock tower in Tywn square, erected to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1890".

Simon Boyle, the Lord Lieutenant of Gwent added his thanks and said he would bring this unveiling to the attention of the Queen.
