Usk Farmers' Club welcomed 150 primary school children to the Usk Showground on Friday (29th June) to join them in unveiling a memorial to their previous Patron, Fitzroy John Somerset, 5th Baron Lord Raglan, who died in 2010.  The memorial stone has been erected alongside the avenue of oaks planted last year, and named Fitzroy Avenue in Lord Raglan's honour. It is local stone, and engraved by Rob Smith of Trostrey – son-in-law to the new Farmers' Club Patron.

As Lord Raglan was a lifelong supporter of Usk Show and was always particularly interested in the children's competitions, it seemed fitting to invite pupils from schools that enter the children's competitions in the Show's Homecraft section. Children from Usk, Raglan, Gilwern, Llanfair Kilgeddin, Ysgol Y Fenni and Gladstone in Cardiff were joined by a party of children from the Ukraine, who were visiting the area as part of the annual Children of Chernobyl scheme.

The children participated in a Cross Country race around the Showground, watched new Patron, Mr David Morgan D L, unveil the stone and then enjoyed a picnic lunch with other Farmers' Club members and friends. Also present were MP David Davies, AM Nick Ramsey and Usk Mayor, Christine Wilkinson.

The race was won by George Anthony, a Year 6 pupil from Raglan Primary and the first girl to cross the line was Hannah Jones, also Year 6 and from Raglan.  They helped new Patron, David Morgan unveil the Memorial Stone. It is hoped that these children will enjoy many events on Usk Showground through the years, including the annual Usk Show – which takes place on 8th September this year.
