YESTERDAY (Tuesday 6th August) proved a big day for Usk when the town was judged for its entry into Britain in Bloom.

Usk is one of three finalists in Wales, alongside Colwyn Bay and Prestatyn, to make the national finals.

Tony Kear, chairman of the Usk in Bloom committee escorted the judges through the gardens and floral displays that had taken so much of the volunteers' time to bring to perfection.

Mayor of Usk, Alec Leathwood said that the displays looked "absolutely stunning".

"I am grateful to all the volunteers who gave their time," he said.

"Now to represent Wales in Britain in Bloom is a real honour".

Usk was a finalist in '94, '98 and 2000, and winner in '92, '95, '96, and 2005, and won a Silver Gilt award in 2009.

The winners will be announced on 12th October.
