Usk visited Ynysddu in the SWALEC Bowl and as in recent weeks the forwards were forced to play the game on the back foot.
However, when Usk did get the ball they looked dangerous. Three times in the first half they broke the Ynysddu defensive line to score tries, with Jon Matthews weighing in with two and Andy Farrell with one. Ynysddu could only reply with a dropped goal. This gave Usk a 15-3 half time lead.
When the second half started, Ynysddu continued to batter Usk in the set pieces but the whole Usk side dug deep and their defensive patterns continued to thwart the Home team. Ynysddu continued to press and all they could manage was a penalty try to leave Usk victors by 15-10 and progression to the next round.
This was a gutsy performance from Usk, where Tim Jenkins did sterling work at the back of the scrum an in the lineout, Dickie Jenkins and Andy Farrell put in some immense tackles, but every Usk player played their part in this win.
