MAGOR Action Group on Rail is appealing for more crowd-funders from the 7,000 surrounding population who are likely to benefit from a nearby train station.

Despite much support, the community action group, set up in 2012, has struggled to get funding for a necessary feasibility study to present to Network Rail. The Governance for Railway Investment Projects (GRIP) report will decide if the project enhances or renews the national rail network.

"The study will actually cost £40,000 and we are currently asking our supporters to raise £20,000 so we can ask the council for match funding to go ahead with the survey," said treasurer, Julie Wilson. The group has currently only raised 15 percent of their target of £20,000.

The new station would be accessible to residents on foot and by bike, with limited parking available. The idea is to promote a green lifestyle and reduce the number of cars on the road.

Magor Action Group committee member, Ted Hand, said: "MCC studies show that around 30,000 trips per year from Severn Tunnel originate from Magor and Undy. That is 60,000 car journeys per year which could be eliminated by having a station at Magor. With the car parking at Severn Tunnel at saturation point and the access to this station being through residential streets, removal of this number of commuters using the Severn Tunnel station would certainly be worthwhile.

"Meanwhile, use of the station is set to increase due to the Local Development Plan of more than 200 extra houses in the area to be built."

The crowd-funding has a minimum investment of £5, which is only deducted from your account if the target of £20,000 is reached. There are various incentives, from fridge magnets to a Hollywood style 'walkway of fame' paving stone to commemorate your donation.

Ted continued: "The local pub, The Golden Lion just pledged £500 to the cause and we want to enthuse other local rail users to help us out with funding too. Local businesses have been approached and we are waiting to hear if any more substantial donations are forthcoming. The school is behind us and the children are collecting funds this week." said Mr Hand. "We have even had pledges from as far afield as the US, so it's not just local people taking an interest!

"Crowdfunding ends on the 2nd March and the danger is that, on this date, all funding will be lost if the target £20,000 is not reached."
