SIR,

I noted the letter from the Town Clerk concerning councillor's expenses.

Part of what she said was a little bit misleading and really needs answering so the public will know the real facts.

Councillors do get expenses, which, of course, comes from the money the people of Monmouth pay in Council Tax (which is about £26 per person per year). Certainly those expenses are minimal compared to those draw by county councillors, but, nonetheless, the money is still claimed.

Then there is the other issue which was raised on the front page of The Beacon only last week. I have yet to meet anyone who is opposed to the town having its CCTV cameras operational, as is the case in the other towns in the county.

I always thought the role of a council was to abide by the views of those that elected them. The petition clearly shows what the townspeople want, so, come on Town Council, act on those views.
