FRIENDS of a courageous 31-year-old Monmouth man who lost his battle against cancer last month are keeping his memory alive through football.
Richard Jenkins, from Osbaston, died in September after a brave and dignified 15-month fight against Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Richard was an ex-youth player at Monmouth Town, played senior football at Llanarth and was a big Cardiff City supporter.
Despite his illness, the former Monmouth Comprehensive School pupil managed to fulfil his dream of watching Cardiff play at Wembley.
He was in the crowd as his beloved Cardiff secured an historic 1-0 win over Barnsley in the FA Cup semi-final in April.
Now, Richard's friends are uniting for a football match in his honour and want to raise money towards research into Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Alastair 'Billy' Maidment, who is helping to organise the match, said: "We all miss Rich very much – he was a popular and special person who tackled his illness with courage. He remained positive at all times and inspired everyone around him.
"After speaking with Rich's family, we thought we would raise some money for a good cause and remember him. We soon realised there was no better way in doing this than through football."
Mr Maidment added: "We are going to have a charity game played between Rich's friends and I would like to hear from anyone who would like to play. People don't need the skills of Joe Ledley to play – the match is open to all those who remember Rich. There will definitely be no barrier in terms of age, gender or ability."
The memorial match is taking place at Llanarth Football Club, near Raglan, on Sunday, November 16 from 1.30pm.
There are plans for a barbecue and players will help to raise money by paying a small fee for turning out in the match.
