THE body of a 26 year old man was found at Caldicot Castle early on Monday morning (1st June).
Named locally as Chepstow man Karl Baynton, the death is not being treated as suspicious.
Tributes have begun for the popular footballer, with several published across the social media.
Karl Lewis, of Chepstow Football Club, said: "Karl Baynton or as the lads knew you 'Monk' we have all lost a true friend in you, a best friend for many of us through thick and thin over the years. Genuine heart of gold, you will be missed by so many people".
Mr Lewis continued: "You were always helping others to smile and be happy, I just hope you are smiling and are happy now mate. I'm just happy I got to spend so many years growing up with you. From all us lads up the football club, sleep tight brother, we all love you so much."
Drinks were raised for Mr Baynton at the club on Monday, and there are talks of memorial games to be held in his honour.
A spokesperson for Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) who own the castle said: "The council is shocked and saddened to discover that a body was found in Caldicot Castle Country Park early Monday morning.
"We are aware that the police are investigating the situation. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the person concerned."
