SIR,
I heard last week that Denis Monger has died at Longtown where he retired from the Baptist Church at Ewyas Harold.
He was a popular figure in Monmouth for many years and was also highly regarded by his fellow-clergy.
After retiring to Longtown, Denis was ordained into the Anglican Church and became Rural Dean of Abbeydore Deanery.
He was active in the churches there to the end and led a service at Ewyas Harold several Sundays ago.
I last met him towards the end of last year when we shared a service to celebrate the Book of Common Prayer for the Hereford Branch of the Prayer Book Society at Welsh Newton. Incidentally, the local Chairman of the Prayer Book Society is Noel Manns, son of Eric of garage fame.
I shall miss a Christian man whose love for Christ was not bounded by matters of churchmanship.
Brian Phillips
(Onetime vicar of Wyesham)
