MONMOUTH is just months from running out of burial plots to bury its dead, The Beacon has been told.
And, there is anger that Monmouthshire County Council, which is legally responsible for providing burial grounds in the county, might be thinking of telling Monmouth families that they should bury their loved ones in burial grounds outside the town, in places such as Usk and Chepstow.
Town Mayor, Counc Terry Christopher, revealed this week that there are just twelve burial spaces left in the town's burial ground.
"Within twelve months we will not be able to bury our dead" said the Mayor.
"Like thousands of other people, I was born in Monmouth and have lived here all my life, and I want to be buried here".
The Mayor said he had attended a meeting of the Central Area Committee, when it was reported that the town was running out of burial spaces.
"The meeting was told that there are fewer and fewer burial spaces". To read more, see The Monmouthshire Beacon issue dated December 17th.
