TOUR de Gwent cyclists overcame far from ideal conditions to complete the inaugural running of the charity bicycle race last Sunday (29th March).

A total of 500 participants battled heavy rain and blustery winds to complete one of three courses, run throughout the Monmouthshire countryside.

With 24, 36 or 74 mile routes making up the Tour de Gwent event, the longest route took in Usk, Chepstow, Tintern and Monmouth, with riders raising money for St David's Hospice Care.

A final total has yet to be announced but it is expected that around £20,000 has been raised for the charity though cyclists' sponsorship and donations.

Keen cyclist Rhys Morton, of sponsors Whitehead Building Services, who took part in the Tour de Gwent, said: "It was a hugely enjoyable event through some of the most wonderful countryside in Wales which, in spite of the adverse conditions, everyone appears to have enjoyed immensely with many saying they are signing up already for next year."

Former Wales rugby players Rhys Williams and Alix Popham were among those that took part in the ride on Sunday.

Organiser Franca Nigro, of St David's Hospice Care, said: "We're thrilled with the enthusiasm and sheer determination shown by all the riders on the day in what were testing conditions.

"We're now putting plans in place for next year's Tour de Gwent."
