Chepstow Rotary Club held its annual torchlit carol service at Tintern Abbey earlier this month.

One couple, who had travelled from Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire, described the event as quite unique, atmospheric and almost mystical. They attend the service every year.

Families lit their flaming torches and formed up on the road. The procession of almost 400 assembled outside the Abbey on a cold but clear evening and were lead around the ancient walls while a choir sang ancient choral music from within.

Once inside the Abbey, the service of six lessons and carols was conducted by the Reverend Nora Hill.

The children looked up at the vast windows and arches of the ruined building while the choir of Wyedean School sang special solo pieces.

At the close of the evening, families dispersed with smiling faces having enjoyed a wonderfully special event to open the festive season.

Rotary president Christopher Wilson said the club strongly supported local communities and was delighted to be able to arrange this spectacular service.

The club was most grateful to Cadw and Chepstow Lions Club for their support of the event.
