A very special concert at St Briavels will start at 7.30 pm on Friday, 29th February. Anyone interested in how musical talent is fostered in young people should go. Every parent with musical interests should bring their children. Some of the country's finest musicians play recitals and chamber music at St Briavels. They work with the world's leading orchestras and studied at famous conservatoires with renowned teachers. All this is usually spelled out in the programme notes. What is rarely mentioned is where they went to school. If you asked, you would find that some of the most memorable musicians had been music scholars at Wells Cathedral School. It is one of only four schools in the country with a specialist music department and the only one that fits specialist music training into a normal school environment. The results are sometimes remarkable. Recent ex-Wells musicians to perform at St Briavels include Brit Award Winner Ruth Palmer and the Artistic Director of the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival, Daniel Tong. The outstanding Malaysian pianist, Mei Yi Foo, also ex-Wells, will give a recital on March 26th. As part of its "Young Musician" Series, St Briavels Music invited Wells to send a group of its best string and piano pupils to perform. They will play the Ravel F Major quartet, The Beethoven quartet Op 18/2 and piano works by Beethoven and Chopin. None of this will be kids' stuff and regular music fans will be impressed. The concert is at St Briavels Church and tickets, at the door, are £7 or £2 for students and school children.
