A Monmouth man has collected an MBE for voluntary services to older people in Wales.

The Beacon reported back in June how Tom Moran was named in the Queen's honour's list and last Friday (29th October) he went to Buckingham Palace to collect his award.

Tom travelled down to London last Thursday night with his three daughters and stayed at the Victory Services Club, a club for current and ex-servicemen.

"We had breakfast on the Friday morning and I was just about to book a taxi for 9am when one of my daughters said she had sorted it," said the 88-year-old.

"At 9am a car appeared – it was a Bentley they had hired to take us to the palace and back.

"After the usual security check at the gates, the car made its way to the inner courtyard.

"A yeoman of the guard was stood at ease next to the entrance and as he saw this car he jumped up, stood to attention and saluted.

"I said 'there's no need to salute me, those days are long gone'."

Tom made his way into the Ballroom of the Palace, where his medal was presented by the Prince of Wales.
