SIR,

I was shocked to read in the Beacon that there is a possibility that our Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in Monmouth may close.

Being a bed and breakfast provider near Monmouth, I am regularly in contact with them and rely on the TIC for information on forthcoming events, referrals and value the information and the efficient, friendly service they provide.

This is ongoing throughout the year.

I know from first hand experience that often the first port of call for my visitors to the area is the TIC and while the internet has an important role to play, it is no substitute for personal attention and local knowledge.

Where do tourists from all over the world head to when visiting a holiday destitation?

Do we really want Monmouth to be bypassed?

Tourism is the single biggest industry in Wales so surely the possible closure of the TIC in Monmouth is very short-sighted in light of the economic crisis and the part that it plays in drawing tourists to boost the economy in Monmouthshire.
