SIR,
We refer to the letter from a 'Nelson Garden volunteer' which appeared in the Beacon dated 5th October, and must assume that only one eye was cast to scan Monnow Street for flower displays.
For the 30th year in succession, we have provided a shop front display; this year's is still in bloom as can be seen in this photograph (above) taken recently.
We do, however, agree with the sentiment expressed that there is a general apathy among retailers in the high street towards floral displays, which is very sad.
A few years ago a lot of money was spent installing an automatic irrigation system down both sides of the street, which would even avoid the effort of watering displays, but it is not now turned on due to lack of use.
