CHEPSTOW'S The Dell Primary School is making all the right moves in national children's chess competitions.

The school came first place in division one at a team of 10 competition in Cardiff on the 25th November which involved more than 40 chess teams.

"For a local primary school we are doing amazingly well," said head-teacher Steve King.

Richard Stevenson, chess club organiser, said: "It's been a fantastic term for the chess club at The Dell. Every time we go to a tournament we seem to walk away with the a trophy. The highlights are the winning of the Cardiff Stadium teams-of-ten event, securing a place in the National Schools Chess Association finals, and Anna Boyle's trip to the World Youth Chess Championships in South Africa.

"I'm also pleased to see the development of some of our younger players, such as Oliver Sapsford, who came joint third in the Welsh Under 8 Rapidplay Championships in mid-December. Hopefully this means that The Dell can remain near the top of Welsh Junior Chess for several years."

The Grange Preparatory School in Monmouth, which came second at the Cardiff teams of ten, has been involved with some great tussles with The Dell, and had the better of the Chepstow school in a teams-of-fifty event held in the autumn to mark the 50th anniversary of the prep school.

Both the Dell and the Grange are through to the finals next July which will be hosted over two days by Uppingham boarding school in Rutland.
