A Monmouth teenager has praised his quick-thinking friends after he fell on railings on his way home.
Owen Hughes was walking along a wall outside Drybridge House when he lost his footing and a railing went through his arm.
"It didn't go all the way through and out the other side but it was in pretty deep," said the 14-year-old.
"It happened so quickly and I must have just taken my arm off the railings straight away.
"I was walking ahead of Lindsay and Phoebe and at first they thought I was joking around, then they could see what I'd done and walked me down to Monnow Vale Hospital but there was no-one there.
"Lindsay laid me down on a bench and tied a jumper around my arm while Phoebe called 999 and asked for an ambulance."
Monmouth School pupil Owen lost a lot of blood and stayed overnight in Abergavenny's Nevill Hall Hospital.
"An ambulance was there within 20 minutes – they were very quick and the paramedic was brilliant," he added.
