Four 12-year-old girls who confronted a robber in Chepstow town centre have been praised by police. Megan Westerman, Amelia Goodwin, Aaliyah Lewis and Millie Stones were in Beaufort Square on New Year's Day when they heard a cry for help. A 73-year-old man had withdrawn a large quantity of money when a man pushed him on the shoulder and grabbed the cash from his hand. The girls ran from across the road when they heard the victim's cries for help, giving chase to the robber, who dropped some of the money and ran away, out of sight of the girls. They then returned to help the victim, collecting all of the money that was strewn across the pavement and dialling 999. When officers arrived, the four girls gave an accurate description of the offender and helped with police enquiries. On Friday 31st January the defendant pleaded guilty to robbery and received a 20-month prison sentence. The four girls were awarded certificates by Monmouthshire Local Policing Unit Chief Inspector Mick Moyles in Chepstow last week. Inspector Roland Giles said: "We wanted to recognise the bravery that the girls showed on the day which helped us to catch this offender who was subsequently sentenced to a prison sentence. "We were particularly impressed as the girls were only 12 years old but still took it upon themselves to follow the offender and contact us giving a detailed description. They should be very proud of their actions."
