Sir,
The Welsh Government is frequently berated for lack of performance but in the control of bovine TB (bTB), they have set an example to the world.
Despite intense pressure from the UK central government to introduce a cull, they correctly applied the proven science.
This has led to a reduction in cattle being destroyed, falling from 11,671 in 2009 to 6,102 last year; a massive 48 per cent reduction achieved without a single badger being needlessly destroyed.
The measures taken by the Welsh Government included annual testing throughout Wales (and maintained). Zero tolerance on overdue tests and movement restrictions.
DNA testing of infected animals to ensure the correct animals went to slaughter and finally, setting up intensive action areas to advise farmers on bio-security best practice.
Congratulations to the Welsh Government; I hope this success can persuade those across the border to cease further inhumane badger slaughtering and utilise a proven approach.
