SIR, Regarding the Beacon's front page coverage of the recent inspectors report on Gibraltar House Care Home, I consider it negative and blown out of proportion, causing despondency for those employed there and concern for those who have relatives living there. My mother has been a contented resident for the past three years. In that time she has received kind, considerate care from a backbone of loyal and dedicated staff. Yes, there is a staff retention problem but considering there are 96 residents looked after by 145 staff, who do a difficult and demanding job, surely a certain turnover of staff would be understandable. As for the recent virus outbreak, incidentally very common in hospitals and care homes, infection control in Gibraltar proved effective as it was soon contained As a regular visitor I often eat and certainly enjoy the care home food. I feel the inspectors and the Beacon have done a huge injustice to the chefs and kitchen staff referring to the food as bland and unappetising. They observed and reported on the pureed meals served to 14 of the residents who need soft food, this is not a fair reflection on the appetising plated meals that are prepared for the majority. A Relatives of Floor One meeting was held on December 23rd to discuss concerns. Mr Shrien Dewani strongly emphasised that he was addressing all issues immediately and assured us that every effort on his part would be made to rectify existing problems rapidly. Most of those present voiced that Gibraltar had become their loved ones comfortable home and would be willing to provide support in any way possible to improve the curent situation. I'm confidant that with the hands-on leadership of Mr Diwani, his new managers and the recommendations of the inspectorate, the home will flourish, move forward and remain a very much needed specialised facility for dementia care in this area.
