Two of Monmouth's best known and certainly most popular councillors are once again preparing to take on prestigious civic offices. Sue White, who was among the 43 councillors re- elected to Monmouthshire County Council at the elections two weeks ago, has been chosen by the ruling Conservative group on the authority to be the new chairman. She has been vice chairman for the past year. Sue is a former Mayor of Monmouth and has a long standing connection with the Town Council. She told The Beacon that she was very grateful to the many people living in the Overmonnow ward who supported her at the recent elections. "They supported me for further terms of office on both the County and Town Councils and I am very grateful" she said. "I can assure them all that I will continue to work hard to ensure they are represented on both councils". It is believed it is the first time for many years that Monmouth has been able to boast that the chairman of the County Council is a councillor in the town. Meanwhile, at the annual meeting of the newly re- elected Monmouth Town Council on Monday evening, Counc Terry Christopher was elected for an historic third term as Mayor by 12 votes, with one abstention and one against. There was one member nominated for the position of Deputy Mayor, Councillor Mrs Ann Were who was voted in unanimously. In his acceptance address, Terry said that in the past year he had a busy, interesting and fulfilling time. This was due to all round team work. He then went on to thank members of the Town Council for their support, the Town Clerk (Sarah Robson) and the Mace Bearers for their help and support at civic events. Terry also thanked the outgoing Deputy Mayor, David Stevens for his encouragement and assistance during the last year, highlighting the contribution that Mr Stevens had made to the previous council, where he had acted as chairs of both the Finance and Policy and Environmental committees. As Mayor for the coming year, he said he would commit himself to the best of his abilities for the Town Council and the people of Monmouth. Earlier that evening Terry presented cheques to the Shire Hall Stewards, St Mary's Church Spire Appeal and Overmonnow Special Needs Unit - the charities that he had supported over the last year. Congratulating Counc Christopher on his re- election, the Chairman of Monmouth and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, David Cummings, said: "Over the last two years we have very much appreciated his constructive approach to issues relating to the town and look forward to working with him for another year."
