THE Chepstow Rotary Club staged the 12th Wye Classic Car Run last Sunday (3rd May).
Around 40 cars took part, ranging from a 90-year-old Model-T Ford to the Jaguar E-Type. Every year a different route is identified taking the competitors through some of the wonderful scenery that we enjoy in our area. Competitors left from the garden centre marshalling area, many having stocked up on a bacon sandwich beforehand. At two minute intervals they received the chequered flag and set forth. This year the route went initially to the Wetlands National Nature Reserve of the RSPB near Newport where many sheltered from the rain while enjoying a coffee in the modern reception area while pointing out the many birds.
The coast was shortly left behind as the cars travelled north through Ebbw Vale to the railway station of the Pontypool and Blaenavon railway. On this higher ground the competitors were in cloud but that did not deter many from taking a ride on the steam trains run by volunteers who were celebrating a 60s theme. Several parties stopped here to take lunch and enjoy the period theme.
Northwards and onwards in every sense as they climbed up and up before a very long and steep descent where their brakes were severely tested. Then on, past Abergavenny, to the Millbrook Garden Centre near Mitchel Troy where a welcome cuppa was available.
The final leg ran through the Forest of Dean via the Coleford Railway Museum and then finished at the 'unknown' destination of the Anchor Inn, Tintern where they were marshalled by Rotarians.
It was clear that everyone enjoyed the drive, the waypoints and meeting the other competitors. They also spoke of the magnificent views that everyone knew they had missed because of the low cloud.
Every team completed the 100-mile 2015 Wye Run and prizes were awarded by Rotary President, Marian Lewis for The Presidents Choice, an elderly Austin 7, and the oldest car, the Model-T Ford.
Much discussion, both social and technical, followed but all involved spoke of the beautiful location, splendid cars and that low cloud.
