Members of Monmouth and Coleford Tae Kwon Do clubs are celebrating success at an international competition.

The ninth Open Tae Kwon Do World Championships were held at the International Arena in Telford, Shropshire, over the weekend of 11th and 12th September.

More than 1,600 competitors from around the globe met to represent their countries.

Seventeen members of the Monmouth and Coleford clubs travelled to the prestigious event and all gave excellent performances.

Sian Lofthouse came home with two medals for sparring. The first was a bronze for the individual event and the second a gold for the team event.

Jacob Perry and Josh Smith won a bronze medal each after only performing in one other previous tournament.

Again the event was sparring, Jacob senior male and Josh junior male.

The championship was a memorable one for Monmouth and Coleford instructor Tony Farr, who was looking to defend the destruction title he won in 2007.

Farr was up against some tough competition from Polish and Argentinean competitors, who nicknamed him 'The Tank' for his destruction techinque.

He performed spectacularly and held on to his title of 'World Champion – hand destruction', which will remain his until the next World Championship, which will be held in three years' time.
