SIR,

The Conservatives have found great difficulty in finding someone to oppose Bob Hayward.

They have selected Simon Lane, who does not live in Monmouth but in Tintern. Mr Lane has had a chequered political career.

Having been elected to the Newport council as a Conservative, after three years he was deselected by the Conservative Party (it would be interesting to know why) and served the remaining five years as an independent.

He seems a strange choice and I cannot advise anyone to vote for him.

Dick Cass
