MONMOUTHSHIRE is continuing to recover after Storm Claudia brought severe flooding to the town, leaving homes, businesses and community spaces damaged and many residents distraught.
The storm affected many areas, including Monmouth and Abergavenny which were severely impacted.
The storm, which hit overnight after an amber weather warning, was shared by the Met Office, caused water levels to rise rapidly, forcing evacuations. The emergency services have worked tirelessly to help those in need.
Incident Commander for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “At the moment we have rescued 80 and it’s still rising.”
The flooding has affected a many parts of the community, from independent shops and cafes to long-established businesses and even ones which are newer to the community.
Several residents were evacuated in the early hours, one local said: “It doesn’t feel real, I feel good now I have been rescued, but knowing that it’s still flooded is scary.
“I was panicking. I didn’t know what to do. I was just trying to move things as high as I could and move my dog up to a safe place and just had to watch it happen.
“You just don’t think it’s going to happen to you, it’s so scary.”
Monmouth Mayor, Councillor Jackie Atkin, said: “As Mayor of Monmouth, I want to express my concern for everyone affected by the flooding.
“I know how sudden and unsettling this has been, and I want to reassure residents that support is available and needs constantly assessed.”
Monmouthshire MP, Catherine Fookes, said: “My thoughts are with everyone affected by the severe flooding overnight.
“The scenes across the county are shocking and I can only say how devastating this is for residents whose homes and businesses have been affected.”
Businesses across the town have echoed a sense of unity, with many people offering to help others. Volunteers have been helping under the circumstances including Monmouth Methodist Church and Monmouth Leisure Centre who have provided a place for people who were evacuated from there homes a safe, warm place along with providing blankets, clothes and toiletries to those who need them.
The community of Monmouth have stood by each other during this difficult time including residents who have opened their doors to those who need somewhere to temporarily stay.
For many families and business owners, the recovery will take days, even weeks and Storm Claudia has left lasting damage but a clear reminder on how the town has come together in a devastating time.
