Square Farm, near Mitchel Troy in Monmouthshire, has been named one of just five finalists in this year’s Soil Farmer of the Year Awards—a national competition recognising farmers who are putting soil health at the heart of their farming systems. Run by Innovation for Agriculture and the Farm Carbon Toolkit, the awards shine a light on farms that are committed to building healthier soils and more resilient farms.
Square Farm, run by father and son Rob and Ryan Whittall was one of three farms involved in the Action on Climate Emergency (ACE) Monmouth Regenerative Farming Scheme, a two-year local mentoring project led by Ben Taylor-Davies (aka “Regen Ben”) alongside ACE Monmouth.

Through the scheme, Square Farm began adopting a range of regenerative practices including herbal leys, mob grazing, and alternative composting systems – all of which support healthier soils by improving structure, boosting microbial life and helping retain nutrients over time.
Rob Whittall of square farm says: "We’re thrilled to be in the final five. Soil health is the foundation of everything we do, and it’s great to have that recognised at a national level"
The judging panel will visit Square Farm to observe the farm first-hand, with winners being announced in early July. If you want to see it for yourself then we have good news! Square Farm will also be opening its gates to the public on Sunday 8th June as part of Open Farm Sunday. Visitors are invited to take a closer look at how the farm is using organic and regenerative principles to grow food, restore soil and support wildlife. Farm tours, delicious food and drink, educational displays and produce from the Square Farm shop will all be part of the day. Free tickets are available here: trybooking.com/uk/84321
