To celebrate Halloween and bonfire night, plus the end of the half term holiday, Monmouth Off Street Project hosted a ‘Skate Jam’ at Monmouth Skatepark which was organised by Monmouthshire Youth Service, and took place on Friday 3rd November.

Young people from Chepstow, Caldicot and Abergavenny travelled to join scooter riders and skateboarders from Monmouth to compete for prizes which had been sourced by the main organisers Steve Caswell and Darren Hickey from MYS, and donated by various businesses including Freestyle Skate Store and Monmouth Off Street Project.

The format of the ‘Jam’ was that each rider was given one minute to use the whole of the park to show their skills, and were marked on: flow around the park, difficulty of tricks and style.

In the scooter section, the winners of each heat went on to compete on their own and were again scored. Overall winner of the scooter section was Jai Maddalena, second place went to Harry Byrom and third place was awarded to Max Lewis.

There were less competitors in the Skateboard section, but these were also scored on their ability to land difficult tricks and style and flow of moving around the park.

First place was awarded to Den Barker, second Tom Birkett and third Matt Doddridge.

Shirley Hughes from Monmouth Off Street Project said ‘it was a fantastic day and well organised by Steve and Darren from the Youth Service. We were delighted to host this event and to see so many talented young people taking part, with a great number of family and friends who came along to support the competitors’.
