Concerns over a noisy generator on a building site have led to calls by two local councillors for the housing association to address the problem.

Councillors for Mitchel Troy and Trellech United Community Council, Jayne McKenna and Richard John have raised concerns about the noise and smell from a generator that’s been running day and night on the Melin Homes site in Llanishen.

Melin Homes are developing eight affordable homes on a site next to the Carpenter’s Arms in the village, but the project has stalled after the contractor went into administration, so Melin are now responsible for security on the site.

The housing association was concerned about fly tipping and youths accessing the site so have had security staff based there round the clock.

A generator has been running to provide security staff with hot water and lighting, but this has caused significant noise and an unpleasant smell for local residents.

After complaints from the two councillors for Mitchel Troy and Trellech United, Melin has agreed to keep the use of the generator to a minimum.

Cllr Jayne McKenna said: “Residents in Llanishen have been really frustrated with the noise and smell from this generator operating day and night.

‘‘They don’t understand why around-the-clock security is required because the most valuable item on site is the generator itself, which is only there to provide facilities for the security guards themselves.

‘‘We’re pleased that Melin has committed to reduce the generator use, but they really need to be asking themselves whether this security is needed at all.”

Cllr Richard John, who is also Conservative Group Leader, added: “Local residents shouldn’t have to put up with this noise and smell all day long when it’s obviously so unnecessary.

‘‘This seems like a ridiculous situation and I hope Melin Homes will quickly move to end this disturbance for residents and in due course progress this development to help provide more affordable homes in the community.”

A spokesperson for Melin Homes said: “We would like to thank local residents for their understanding and patience during the development of the site. We have spoken with local councillors and have acted to alleviate the noise, by reducing the times the generator is used.”
