SIR,

Wales is set to go to the polls twice over the coming 12 months, for both a referendum on further law-making powers, and our own Assembly elections.

I have formally written to the new Secretary of State for Wales, Cheryl Gillan, urging her to consider scheduling both votes on the same day.

The referendum could take place as early as Autumn, but does not need to be rushed through. It's vital the question as it will appear on the ballot is scrutinised, and the 'yes' and 'no' campaigns need time to get their messages across.

Already in the Assembly elections, voters are faced with two separate ballots accounting for constituency seats and regional lists.

I do not see why a third ballot on further law-making powers would pose a problem.

We have been told by the new government in Westminster to expect severe cuts in public service to reduce the financial deficit.

It would be absolutely obscene to pay £5 million extra for a referendum this year when thousands could face losing their jobs.

The prudent approach must be to hold one ballot in May next year.
