SIR,
It was with enormous sadness that I read of the death of Jack Roocroft.
I had only known Jack for just over a year, but in that time I came to recognise the deep and abiding passion he had for the town of Monmouth.
From Monmouth in Bloom, to the work he did on the allotments, from his battles to get flowers on the roof of the otherwise drab toilet block, to his efforts to re-instate the village green, to his battle to have the waste ground alongside the link road turned into allotments, he never faltered and carried those battles on to the end of his life.
Many a town would love to have a campaigner like Jack.
Unfortunately, in Monmouth he was considered simply to be a nuisance, not worthy of any attention or regard.
Our town is all the poorer for his passing, we shall not see his like again.
Terry Ashton
(Monmouth)
