MADAM,
The Monmouth Male Voice Choir readily agreed to fit a fundraiser into their busy schedule at St Mary’s RC Church on Friday 18th May, in aid of the charity Monmouthshire Home-Start.
MC Martin Newell introduced Pam Lloyd Manager of Home-Start, inviting her to expand the group’s knowledge on the function of the organisation, which was invaluable for those who were unsure of the vital role it plays in Monmouth.
The choir repertoire consisted of 14 numbers with an encore of two extra songs, they took their audience to ‘hairs on the back of the neck’ with their rendition of two Les Miserables songs, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ and ‘Bring him Home’. Later in the programme ‘Ave Verum’ was sung with such sensitivity it brought a tear to the eye.
By contrast the choir then took the audience to a completely different level with a rousing ‘Rhythm of Life’. With all dentures firmly fixed in place this tongue twister was a triumph, with choir and audience waving hands, tapping feet and generally jigging about.
The evening was an occasion that combined seriousness and laughter that left the audience smiling and commenting about what a superb evening they had enjoyed. One thing is certain, if you think you know what to expect at an MMVC concert you’d be wrong!
MMVC was suitably assisted by the MC and naturally charismatic Martin Newell (second tenor) whose gentle joshing and wit in between songs had the audience in fits of giggles each time he regaled his stories. What a gem he is. His singing’s not bad either!
Ian Russell informed us such was the prowess of Helen Stidolph (accompanist) that during two numbers, Helen played a double piano score on her own. The description on just how this is achieved is tricky to explain however; I believe she has wings on her fingers, considering the speed they moved over the keys.
In conclusion thanks must go to the front and back of house staff, whose organisational skills ensured the evening went without hitch.
