Sir,

Monmouth Rotary Club wishes to express its sincere thanks and gratitude to the emergency services who responded to the incident at Redbrook during the recent raft race.

The St John's Ambulance, the County ambulance, Air Ambulance, and Fire Brigade were very quickly on the scene and undoubtedly saved a person's life. The rafter has subsequently made a full recovery.

We would also like to thank the member of public who entered the water and assisted in the rescue and resuscitation of the rafter, and the local canoeist who was on hand to give assistance. These gentlemen wish to remain anonymous. The raft race was run this year to raise funds for St David's Hospice Foundation Hospice Care and members of the public have been very generous in supporting the 57 teams that entered.

So far more than £10,000 has been received in entry fees and sponsorship. It is hoped that this will increase to £15,000 in the coming weeks. St David's Foundation Hospice Care is a Gwent based charity caring for patients who have been diagnosed with a life threatening illness.

If anybody would like to make a donation they can do so by telephoning Rotarian David Forbes on 01600 712665.
