ROADWORKS in Monmouth town centre have been causing trouble for school traffic and residents.

The work, which involves reconstruction of the footway and highway in St John’s Street, Glendower Street and St James’ Street, as well as repairs to Wye bridge is currently expected to be completed by the end of October.

Despite traffic control, residents have complained about the dangers present not only for pedestrians but for school children at Monmouth Comprehensive School.

Residents of the town flocked to Facebook, describing teachers having to help students to cross the busy A40 road, acting as ‘lollipop ladies’.

One commenter wrote: “The way they have laid out the roadworks on the bridge is dangerous for the kids walking to school. They have to cross the road right on the junction of the dual carriageway. No thought has gone into it at all”

Another said: “I don’t understand why they cant do these road works in the school holidays as there is less traffic about and less disruption. They would have had six weeks of the roads being quieter.”
