An important part of the involvement of the Royal Naval Association's Monmouth branch is raising funds to help the many organisations, both local and naval, which ask them for assistance. Their primary means of raising money is a street collection which they undertake at Bank Holiday time. Residents and visitors to Monmouth enable the local branch to bank about £700 every year. Their secondary income comes from the profit from the occassional Royal Marines Band concerts which are very popular and raise around £2,500 for each event. To date, they have raised £12,000 which has been distributed to Royal Navy and Royal Marines' combat stress charities. Local beneficieries include the Ross and Monmouth Sea Cadets, Overmonnow Special Needs Unit, the Royal Naval Temple on the Kymin, King George Fund for Sailors, St Mary's Church spire, the First World War memorial at Penallt, the HMS Monmouth Memorial Screen and many others. The next major project is the fifth Royal marines Band Concert at 7.30pm on 10th October at The Blake Theatre, when the RNA will be hosting the Band of the Royal Marines at Commando Training Centre at Lymstone. Tickets are £15 available from the Nelson Museum, Blake Theatre or direct from the RNA on 01600 715084.
