River users are calling for action to improve the safety of the Wye after a canoeist was dramatically rescued earlier this month.
Richard Simpson was forced to cling onto his overturned canoe for 30 minutes before being rescued by Tony Hayward in Tintern on 3rd July.
The propellor of his engine-propelled Canadian canoe had become entangled on a plastic bag, causing the vessel to drift into a submerged tree.
After being carried downstream for a mile-and-a-half from his Brockweir home, Mr Simpson was saved after calling out to fellow canoeist Mr Hayward, who happened to be walking near the river.
Driftwood, plastic bags and other debris are not uncommon finds for regular users of the river, and some are worried that more accidents like this will happen if it is not cleared up.
