A Monmouthshire soldier has died as a result of wounds sustained whilst serving in Afghanistan.

He is the second local soldier to die in the conflict. Earlier this year, Rifleman Jamie Gunn (22), of Monmouth, was killed in action in Afghanistan.

A military spokesman said this week: "It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that Private Richard Hunt, from 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh, died at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Selly Oak on Saturday, August 15th, from wounds sustained in Helmand province two days previous".

Private Hunt, whose family home is at Hardwick, near Abergavenny, was wounded as a result of an explosion while on a vehicle patrol near Musa Qaleh in Helmand province on the morning of August 13th.
