MORE than £320,000 is to be poured into recreation projects for Caerwent.

Section 106 funding has been received from Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) following a housing development in Merton Green, Caerwent.

MCC has agreed to provide £326,988 for off site recreation projects in the area to benefit the Caerwent community.

An initial amount of £344,488 was allocated from developers of the housing site but £17,500 was used as a contribution to the 3G pitch in Caldicot leaving £326,988 to be poured into local projects.

The Lower Wye Area Committee met last Wednesday (9th September) to discuss funding for three groups.

Applications for funding were received from Crick Wildlife and Environmental Group to develop a wildflower meadow on a piece of land in Crick leased from MCC by the community council.

The Old Gym Community Centre submitted a request to carry out building improvements to benefit existing and future users of the centre. The centre is used by an active youth group along with a number of recreational groups.

Caerwent Playing Fields Association have also requested funding to carry out extensions and improvements including improved sports changing rooms at the village hall, located at Caerwent playing field.

Mike Moran, community infrastructure coordinator at MCC, said: “The Lower Wye Area Committee and the Caerwent Community Council were happy with the officer recommendations about the allocation of the Caerwent Off Site Recreation Fund.

“A full report will be considered by MCC’s Cabinet on the 7th October.”

A decision on the allocation of grants will also be made by Cabinet on the 7th October.
