A service to commemorate the centenary of the death in action of Capt David Dudley took place at Overmonnow Church on Saturday 9th May.

Other men of Overmonnow who gave their lives in the First World War were also remembered by parishioners and civic leaders.

Captain David Dudley was the son of the Rev. Francis Dudley, vicar of Overmonnow and Alice Dudley, and served with the 91st Punjabis (Light Infantry). He was killed at the battle for Aubers Ridge in May 1915 and is buried in the Cabaret Rouge British Cemetery in Souchez, France. He was 34 years old.

A wreath was laid by the High Sheriff of Gwent, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Tuggey DL at the cross in the garden of the church that was erected by Captain Dudley's father in 1918.

The ceremony followed a service that included the anthem 'The man we never knew', sung by the Monmouth Male Voice Choir and the names of those who gave their lives were read out prior to the Last Post.

Relatives of the men that made the ultimate sacrifice attended the service including George Betteridge, whose grandfather was a driver and died age 20 in 1918 and William 'Ron' Roberts, pictured below, who was born in Mitchel Troy and served in the Air Force in the Second World War.
