Students and staff at John Kyrle are celebrating the school's best ever A Level results. The head boy and girl will both be studying at Oxford University. Year 13 had 52% of all entries scoring an A or B grade; 70% at A-C; an overall pass rate of 98% and a UCAS Average Points Score of 264 per student. These results are all the more impressive when it is noted that they do not include general studies. The vast majority of departments had 100% pass rates with music, product design, English, ethics, theatre studies, art, sociology and food technology having all their students gaining all top grades. At a time when maths and modern foreign languages are falling in popularity at other schools and colleges, some of the best results, including A Grades, were in maths and French. Headteacher, Nigel Griffiths praised his staff and governors, and the students and their parents, saying he was delighted with the continued upward trajectory of results. "Students' excellent grades have allowed them all to access their first choice university courses across the UK for this September. These include our Head Girl, Roberta Fisher, and Head Boy, Jacob Stroud, who will take places at Oxford University to read biological sciences and law respectively. "Claire Powell will be reading veterinary science at Nottingham. Other notable offers include Bryony Collins, who will read modern foreign languages at Exeter; Jess Mutton, reading law and French at King's College London and David Bosticco who will study maths and physics at University College London. Mr Griffiths added: "In addition to our own students' successes, I am especially pleased to see excellent achievements from students who continue to join us from other schools across Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire. "The increased investment in the school leading to the recently opened £1 million Sixth Form and Adult Learning Centre has been money well spent. We have been identified as a High Performing Specialist School with multi-specialist status and these results confirm this judgement. Last year we were in the top 10 - 15% of schools and colleges as judged by value added scores and this year should see us move even higher up this particular table. I am, as ever, ambitious for even more improvements in years to come." Rob Wallace, Head of Sixth Form identified the key drivers for this continued success. He said: "Outstanding teaching with a relentless focus upon high standards, coupled with the individual care given to students and the school's close partnership with parents led to these excellent achievements. "Students have also been widely involved in sport, music, drama and community service throughout their two years with us. Taken together this further confirms the strength of John Kyrle's sixth form experience."
