The renowned artist Raphael died aged just 37 years old in Rome in 1520.
In his brief but stellar career he shaped the course of Western culture like few artists before or since.
To mark the 500th anniversary of his death the greatest exhibition ever held of his works took place in Rome and Exhibition on Screen was granted exclusive access to make a film based on this once-in-a-lifetime show.
And this will be screening at the Drill Hall Chepstow on Thursday November 4 at 7.30pm.
’Raphael Revealed’ looks not only at his celebrated paintings and drawings but his work in architecture, poetry, and designs for sculpture, tapestry and prints.
The exhibition featured over two hundred masterpieces, with over a hundred brought together for the first time ever, with loans from major museums and galleries around the world and now the film provides a lasting legacy and unprecedented opportunity to see the breadth of Raphael’s skill, creativity and ingenuity.
Award-winning film director Phil Grabsky provides a fresh look at this giant of the Renaissance, and shows why he is considered one of the all-time greats.
The film covers his life in Rome, and includes unique footage of the ancient Rome that was such a powerful influence, including rare footage of Nero’s Golden House that Raphael himself visited.
The film based on this stunning landmark exhibition seen by relatively few people in post-lockdown Rome, is a welcome return for Exhibition on Screen films to the Drill Hall, and gives a Chepstow audience a chance to share in this remarkable exhibition and discover ’Raphael Revealed’.
Tickets priced £10 can be booked online in advance from www.drillhallchepstow.co.uk or available at the door. Seating is socially distanced, bring a mask, bar refreshments available. Showing in support of Monmouthshire Museums.
