A GROUP of budding young poets inspired and enchanted their fellow school friends, teachers and parents by winning class prizes for outstanding work as part of Raglan Primary School's poetry week.

The children, who were chosen as winners from each year group, had their poems read aloud in a special assembly by Headteacher Mrs Liz Blakemore and were awarded certificates and a book for their achievements.

The class winners were: Jason Powell, Year 6; Finlay Mitchell, Year 4; Ben Jones, Year 5; his sister Charlotte, Year 3; and identical twins Kieran and Ashley Goncalves, Year 1.

The School plaque and shield for the best poem went to six-year-old Freya Johnson from Year 2. Freya was brave enough to read her own poem in the School assembly and was congratulated as the overall winner.

Freya's winning poem

The Rain

The rain goes splash! In a puddle. Tip, tap, top!

Spitting, drizzling, tipping as it goes.

It goes bang! On the roof tops and plop down from the chimney pot

It trickles on my toes, dripping as it goes.

Sometimes it is calm and runs down my arm.

It showers sometimes and makes big floods.

But we are safe in our warm huts.

And I like the rain.
