A SELFLESS Raglan minister has taken supplies to refugees living in Calais.
Rob Atkins packed up the car with clothes and provisions donated by the community and headed out with friend Dogs Darnborough last Friday (1st April).
This is the second visit to Calais for Rob, who went previously last November.
The pair went to visit the refugees who are fleeing desperate situations in their countries.
While in Calais, they visited those fleeing Sudan and Iran. Rob met with Iranians at the camp who had fled their country for fear of religious persecution; they had converted to Christianity from Islam.
Rob, minister at Raglan Baptist Church, was deeply moved by the living conditions of those in the camp. He said: “Many refugees are living in shipping containers and sleep six to a container.
“One thing that struck me when walking through the camp was how much it felt like a medieval town. Little shops were being made out of bric-a-brac and you could see streets being formed.
“I got to speak to some Iranian refugees who were fleeing their country for religious reasons. A few were able to attend a service where I preached in a Boulogne church.”
While there, Rob also used his gift of music to perform a concert in a city called Samer to around 50 people.
Rob is hoping to travel back to Calais in June and is hoping to organise a fundraising concert to fund the trip.
